Alone or Lonely?

Alone and Lonely might have similar meanings in the dictionary, but they’re not necessarily the same in life.

Alone is when you’re with no one else. Being on a video call with a bunch of friends whilst being physically alone isn’t necessarily being alone at that moment. Alone is when you do not have anyone with you, physically or through technology. It does mean you’re alone if you are in your room (and do not want to go out perhaps). But anyways, you have you.

But being lonely is very different from alone. You can be alone, but not lonely or you can be lonely and not alone.

Lonely is when you have no one to talk to or usually nothing to keep you interested. Basically, even you isn’t very much with you. You can be with a bunch of people, but at that moment, you don’t like being with them. That’s when loneliness creeps in. You feel like you have no one to talk to. You feel like you have only you, or maybe you feel like you’re not much interested in yourself.

Being alone doesn’t mean you are lonely. So, in this blogpost, I am going to tell you a few ways, by implementing which, you can overcome being lonely when you’re alone.

  • Pick up a hobby: May it be anything. Music, reading, anything. But choose ones that keep you interested in them.
  • Communicate: The world isn’t a lonely place! Try to communicate with friends, family or play with pets if you have any. I get it when you do not want to speak to people. Then, maybe a mirror talk or a letter addressed to yourself might help.
  • Explore things: Explore what’s in your neighborhood, go for a walk perhaps, enjoy the nature! You can also enjoy music that you like and discover new songs, albums or artists of your liking! Same thing applies to videos, series, shows or movies!
  • Make yourself feel busy: Gather your motivation and clean your room or make something new — a doodle, a jot, a poem or anything! Try to find work to do that benefits you and by doing so, forget you’re lonely.
  • Be positive: You aren’t lonely. The world is with you. Say some affirmations and do acts of self care!
